Glendale Cove is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in British Columbia. Prime viewing times are in the autumn when the bears feed on the spawning salmon but you may also see these magnificent creatures in the spring. Ever cautious mothers bring out their cubs at this time to feed on new growth sedges and succulents. While numbers are lower in summer, heavy berry crops tends to keep the bears nearby and allow regular sightings.
Bear watching is done from boats in spring and early summer, this permits the closest proximity without creating stress for the bears. In the mid season the chance to start using the tree platforms comes around and by mid-August the salmon re-appear and the platforms are in full use.
There are also a varied choice of marine wildlife tours, these are dependant on seasonal changes but there are opportunities to see seals, sea lions, porpoises, dolphins and the occasional Minke whale that may travel though the area. From July onwards, tours have the added attraction of the orca (killer) whale. With so much to see and do tours can last up to 10 hours. September brings migrating Humpbacks on their way to Hawaii.
In addition to all this there are Jetboat tours up the Kliniklini River, day-hiking tours, and guided kayaking tours in the estuary. Returning guests have recommended a minimum of 3 or 4 nights at the Lodge to get the best from the tour.
