Buffalo at Yellowstone Park

This is an excellent short introduction to Yellowstone National Park and the nearby Wyoming countryside. Get to know Jackson Hole, Thermopolis and Cody without having to travel huge distances. This trip may be taken before or after ranch stays at the likes of the UXU or Lazy L & B or a horse drive at Silver Spur Ranch in Idaho.

 


 

Day 1   Jackson/Painted Buffalo Inn                                      10 miles airport to town

You may arrive too late to enjoy Jackson to it’s full tonight but for your first night you will be made most welcome at this property. Located just three short blocks from the Town Square, the Painted Buffalo Inn offers convenient, comfortable accommodation in the heart of downtown Jackson. Within walking distance of your front door you will find streets lined with restaurants, shops, museums and galleries.


Day 2   Jackson/Painted Buffalo Inn

Today you will have the opportunity to explore the countryside around the town. As you are surrounded by mountains and valleys, there are some stunning views to enjoy.


Day 3   Thermopolis/BW The Plaza Hotel                             
   225 miles

Bighorn Mountains - spring flowers wyomingToday you will drive south east through Dubois and Riverton through the Wind River Indian Reservation. Thermopolis has the largest mineral hot springs State Park.  The Wind River Canyon is located 6 miles South of Thermopolis on WY Hwy 20. The canyon is 14 miles in length and the Big Horn river flows through it. There are several thousand acres dedicated to the buffalo herd that the state of  Wyoming maintains at Hot Springs State Park


Day 4   Cody/Holiday Inn

Named after Buffalo Bill Cody, this town is the eastern gateway to Yellowstone and boast’s one of the finest Museums in the north west. From June to August there is a nightly rodeo to enjoy. This area is renowned for white water rafting and fishing.


 

 

Day 5   Yellowstone Park/Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel (Frontier Cabins)  150 milesYellowstone geyzer

On the way into the Park, stop at Bill Cody’s old hunting lodge for a bite to eat then travel on into the northern section of this magical Park. Geo-thermals occur throughout this area and wildlife is usually to be seen close to the road.

 

 


Day 6   Yellowstone Park/Grant Village (mid range rooms)              
     125 miles

 

 

Yellowstone Park - Upper BasinTravelling down through the centre of Yellowstone you will find the majority ofYellowstone geyzer the hot pools and geysers here.  Visit Old Faithful and watch the regular eruption of super-charged water. Grant Village is just east of Old Faithful on the shore of Lake Yellowstone

 

 

 

 

Day 7   Jackson/Painted Buffalo Inn                                                           100 miles

There’s still plenty to see in Yellowstone today and by afternoon you can start towards the South gate and into the neighbouring Grand Teton Park with more inspiring mountain vistas. As this is your last night, visit one of Jackson’s lively bars and catch some of them “Good Ol Boys” enjoying a night’s dancing.

 

Day 8 After a morning catch up on last minute shopping, return your car to Jackson Hole Airport.

This tour operates between 15th  May & 20th Sept  2006. Daily departures. The price is based on two sharing and includes the accommodation on a room only basis with local taxes. A 4 Door Compact car with unlimited mileage, all insurances and taxes, extra driver fee and first tank of fuel. Flight information:

 

For flights we recommend the British Airways service to Denver and onward domestic services with United Airlines. You should arrive in Jackson at about 10.15pm and the return service leaves around 4.30pm. Cars are available for collection until 11.00pm. Alternatively you may consider breaking the journey at Denver and flying to Jackson the next day arriving around 12.20.
