Horse Drive Montana £1088 plus flights

12-16 June 2008  Max number of guests 30 on this adventure - camping out at night, riding 4-6 hours a day, Altitude 4-6,000 ft, 16 years +, max weight 250 lbs

Experience true western hospitality with your family hosts Monte and Mary Ellen Schnur and their daughters  who have spent over thirty years sharing Montana with guests from all over the world.

Gather nearly 70 horses from spring pasture and settle them on their summer range on the Rocky Mountain Front, bordering the Bob Marshall Wilderness.   This spectacular mountain region is about an hours drive south of Glacier National Park, in historic “cowboy country”.

Price Includes horses, wranglers, accommodations, meals, transportation during the roundup, and entertainment from Sunday evening through Saturday afternoon.

This horse drive is conducted in the mountains and foothills of southwest and central Montana.  This is big country; you can see for miles, and can often see several mountain ranges at once.  You'll be able to ride at a pace that suits your riding experience, over varied terrain.  Depending on the season of the year, you may ride through lush green flower-filled meadows, or you may be riding on dry native short-grass range at other times.

You can expect to ride about four hours per day; a long day might be six hours.  Weather is changeable.  You may have sunshine, rain, or even a brief snow.  Temperatures are generally moderate, and usually quite cool at night, no matter how warm the day was.

The horses are mountain horses, used to travelling in this country.   During the winter months, they range free, like wild horses.  They are experienced in the work they do, most especially in taking good care of their riders.  There are horses of temperament and ability to match every level of rider.  Breeds represented in their herd include Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Appaloosa, Paint, Arabian, Morgan, Tennessee Walker, and draft cross.

Tentative Itinerary  (subject to change)

1st day:  Arrive in Great Falls, MT. The Schnur family will  take you to camp where you'll meet your partners in adventure, enjoy a ranch-style supper, and settle into comfortable tent accommodations.

2n Day:  After a hearty breakfast, meet your horse and review safety practices.  Learn the basics of riding in rough country from Monte.  Then head out with your wrangler for an orientation ride, and  see how many horses you can locate!  Lunch will be provided in the field.  After supper, you'll have time to fish, begin roping lessons, or kick back and enjoy a campfire gathering.

3 & 4th day Breakfast will be early!  Then saddle up and head out for a day of exciting work, gathering horses.  Depending on weather and “independent minds” in the horse herd, you can plan on about six hours of riding each day.  Again, you'll enjoy hearty lunches in the field, and a delicious ranch supper each evening, followed by relaxation and entertainment.

5th day:  After the horses are settled in the mountain pasture, we'll take an evening ride to a nearby “mountain spa” for a warm soak and relaxation.   Return ride to Sun Canyon will be “under the stars”.

6th day :   Time for a different kind of horse fun!  Today we'll head out after breakfast to enjoy the high country scenery and wildlife.   After returning to the ranch, we'll get a chance to learn what “behind-the-scenes” work goes into producing a quality hometown rodeo.  The end of the day will feature western dancing at Sun Canyon.

7th day:   Return the saddle horses to their home pasture, and return in the evening to Great Falls so you can return home or continue your vacation from there.

American Round-Up recommend you allow half a day to visit The Charlie Russell Art Museum in Great Falls

This adventure is for you if you already have some riding experience in varied terrain, are in good physical condition, and enjoy the outdoors.  Riding is fast.  Previous cattle drive, fox hunting, cross country, etc. riding is helpful.
