This is one of the best two day white water rafting trips around.
It gives you the real taste of those longer trips but is designed for those who
may not have the time for something a bit longer. In just two days you get to
the heart of western American wilderness. An exciting day of rapids in Westwater Canyon will make you feel like you’ve just spent a week in the
backcountry. You’ll encounter 12 agitated, brawling rapids in one of the more
unusual canyons in the West.
As you float down canyon, the walls squeeze the
river into a narrow gorge where it erupts into spectacular rapids. The results
are big holes and big waves. In a small row raft you are as close to the action
as you can be as your expert guide negotiates Funnel Falls, Skull Rapid, and
Sock It To Me! Your journey also takes you through some of the most fascinating
geology. In Westwater Canyon, the river cuts through the black Pre-Cambrian
rock, some of the oldest found anywhere on earth. You’ll hike side canyons and
see 1000-year old Indian writings. Watch out for eagles, blue heron and the
elusive ibis. You may want to sleep out under more stars than you've ever seen.
This getaway is so full and so exciting, you’ll feel like you’ve been gone for
two weeks, not two days!
ITINERARY
Day 1 – Lunch & Dinner
Your exciting getaway
begins at the Tag-A-Long office at 6:30 a.m. We’ll board vehicles at 7:00 a.m.
for a drive to the river "put in." At the river’s edge, your guide will give you
a thorough safety orientation, fit you with a life jacket and then, you’re off!
Today we begin passing low grounds, making way to a fault-line where looms Wild
Horse Canyon. Miner’s Cabin, a historic gold mining camp, is the first feature.
This stretch of the river is also good for birding, as you scan the shore for
blue heron and the elusive ibis. After lunch, we plunge into fast-moving waters.
Below red rock canyon walls, black Vishnu Schist erupts from the very belly of
the earth, squeezing the river into an even faster current that will explode
into rapids tomorrow. After a day of getting thoroughly in tune with the river,
we’ll make camp near the Little Dolores River. While you relax this evening,
your professional guide prepares a surprisingly scrumptious meal. Listen to the
call of the wild while you camp under the stars.
Day 2 – Breakfast &
Lunch
Breakfast is served on the
banks of the Colorado River before we break camp. The guides have readied the
boats for the rough and tumble ride through the rapids you’ll encounter today.
Before you hit Marble Canyon Rapid, your guide will have told you stories of
Cowboy Cave and all the folklore surrounding it. The next succession of rapids
flaunt names like Big Hummer, Funnel Falls, Surprise, Skull and Sock It To Me!
You’ll feel the punch of every one of them in the small, lightweight row-raft.
After all that action, you’ll be happy to leisurely row out of this stunning
canyon while enjoying more birding, more history, and more geology with your
naturalist guide as narrator. Another delicious meal will be served on shore
before boarding vehicles for the return trip to Moab.
