A
trip on the Salmon not only offers roller coaster rapids but also fabulous
swimming, wonderful canyonlands and exotic white sand beaches where you can play
volley ball, play frisbee or make a sand castle. You drift through quiet
pools and then surge into the churning white water. The Salmon is the
largest undammed river in the continental USA.
The Trip : Plan to meet at the designated motel the night before at 8pm for a pre trip meeting. Closest airport is Spokane or Boise, where you can hire a car and drive 114 miles to Lewiston, Idaho or catch a commuter flight to Lewiston. Alternatively All Ways transportation shuttle service which has to be prebooked from Spokane to Lewiston meeting point.

Put-in for the Salmon River Canyon is at Pine Bar. Land transportation to put-in from Lewiston/Clarkston the morning of the first day of the trip from your motel. The drive is approximately 75 miles.
The Salmon Canyon is an ideal place to
enjoy paddle rafts and inflatable kayaks. Green,
Cougar, Snow Hole, and Blue canyons offer many of the Salmon's best rapids,
including Demons Drop, Pine Bar, Bodacious Bounce, Half & Half, Snow Hole,
China, Zig Zag, Slide, Sluicebox, Checkerboard, Eye of the Needle, and more.
Fishing : Many species of cold and warm water fish live in the Salmon River, including rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, catfish, white sturgeon, steelhead, and salmon. Summer trips offer fly and spin casting for bass and trout, and "catch & release" fishing for white sturgeon. Light weight spin casting gear, sturgeon fishing gear provided which can reach more than 9 feet in length. Idaho Fishing License available at $11.50 for the first day and $5 for each additional day.
History : The Nez Perce War touched this region, and stories of the Billy Creek Crossing and the Battle of White Bird are remarkable chapters of Salmon River history. We stop to inspect Chinese rock houses, abandoned mines, and Indian pictograph sites.
Wildlife : The area's birds include canyon wren, water ouzel, kingfisher, chukar partridge, Canada geese, merganser, heron, and many more. These canyons feature one of the world's highest concentrations of raptors. Golden eagle, red-tailed hawk, northern harrier, American kestrel, nighthawk, and osprey all frequent the Canyon. You can hear coyotes howl and spot beaver, otter, or mink. Mule deer and white-tailed deer are often seen during the summer. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, elk, cougar, and bobcat are common but rarely spotted.
End of Trip : Early afternoon on the last day of the trip take out at Hellar Bar. Transportation provided back to Lewiston (34 miles). Here you pick up your hire car or spend the night in Lewiston, transfer by commuter flight from Lewiston to Boise or Spokane that evening. Alternatively prebook the shuttle
