Triple J Ranch Pack Trip Montana

From mid June to late September, The JJJ offer 6 to 10 day highly organised horse pack trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the “crown jewel” of the wilderness system. Each trip is unique ranging from base-camp oriented to trips that traverse the wilderness.

Guests arrive at the ranch in the late afternoon the day before the trip goes out, and after dinner, we will fit them to their horse and saddle. The guest’s sleeping bag, pad and duffle will be mantied up that evening, so they will need to bring an overnight bag for whatever they need in the morning. This can be left at the ranch while they are in the backcountry.

Following an early breakfast, saddle up and begin the adventure! Depending on each trips’ itinerary, we will ride six to eighteen miles arriving at our campsite between 3 to 4 pm. The wranglers will unload the pack mules, make a comfortable camp, and assist you in setting up guests’ tents. Their camp cook sets up a kitchen under a

protective kitchen-fly, and prepares delicious hearty meal to enjoy around the campfire.

Each camp is picturesque, and allows the guest time to explore, fish, ride or relax depending on individual interest. The area abounds in wildlife. Some trips base out of one or two areas with scenic day rides or fishing. Our travelling trips usually ride one day and layover the next day with 3-4 camps.

At the conclusion of the pack-trip, we will ride back to the Ranch, arriving around 4 pm. Dinner and the nights lodging are included, along with the next morning’s breakfast.

1: SUN RIVER VALLEY TRIP June 25-29 (5 days on the trail)

Our first pack-trip of the season is designed to maximize opportunity for wildlife watching with emphasis placed on day rides and hiking in the early summer range of elk, deer, and bighorn sheep. The Sun River Valley is unique for its expansive meadows rimmed by snow-capped peaks.

2: NORTH FORK OF THE SUN TRIP July 8-13 (6 days on the trail)

We'll visit the North Fork of the Sun River and camp in "Pretty Prairie" for the first two days, and then move camp to Glenn Creek areas. Each day offers trout fishing opportunities and new trails to explore.

3: SUN RIVER VALLEY TRIP July 18-24 (7 days on the trail)

This trip visits the "Chinese Wall", a majestic and rugged 12 mile section of the Continental Divide.

Making a loop, we travel up to the Chinese Wall and ride beneath the splendor of this spectacular

rock formation. Excellent opportunities for exploring the surrounding areas and for trout fishing.

4: CHINESE WALL MOOSE CREEK TRIP August 1 - 7 (7 days on the trail)

This trip is also visits the famous Chinese Wall and travels into the Sun River valley area, and then climbs to the Chinese Wall, staying at the mouth and head of Moose Creek. Great fishing and scenic opportunities.

5: BIGGS CREEK EXTRAVAGANZA

August 15 - 20 (6 days on the trail)

Late August welcomes the first hint of fall in the air. This trip travels to our base camp on Biggs Creek in the North Fork area of the Sun River Valley. We'll day ride to scenic locations such as Beartop Lookout or Gates Park. Fishing opportunities abound.

Trip #6: INDIAN SUMMER TRIP August 30- September 5 (7 days on the trail)

The Sun River Elk herd is over 2000 in number and in September, the fall breeding season is in full swing. We head west to see first hand the elk dynamics and other wildlife with the backdrop of the high country. Layover days are filled with fishing, hiking, interpretive day rides, or just plain relaxing in a peaceful setting.

** Trips must have a minimum of 5 guests ~ The ranch have the right to change day to day itinerary based on unforeseen circumstances, weather, rider ability, etc.
